Singer Sonu Nigam recently expressed his concerns regarding the Padma Awards, noting that even though many awards are being given posthumously, the legendary Kishore Kumar has yet to be honoured. In a video shared on Instagram, Sonu addressed the absence of Padma awards for notable singers. It included the names of Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Sonu Nigam calls to acknowledge singers for Padma Awards

In the clip, Sonu emphasized the impact of these artists, “Do aese singers hai jinhone poore duniya ke singers ko inspire kiya hai” (There are two singers who have inspired singers all over the world). He pointed out that while Mohammad Rafi has received the Padma Shri. Also m mentioned that Kishore Kumar has not even been awarded this honour, despite deserving it.

He added, “Posthumously award mil rahe hai na” (Awards are being given posthumously, right)? Sonu went on to highlight the contributions of contemporary singers: “Among the current artists, Alka Yagnik has had a long and successful career, yet she hasn’t received any recognition. Shreya Ghoshal has been showcasing her talent for years and deserves to be honoured. Sunidhi Chauhan has inspired an entire generation with her distinct voice, but she remains unrecognized as well.”

At the end of the video, Sonu invited his followers to mention others who have yet to receive Padma awards, whether in music, acting, science, or literature. His post was titled, “India and its pending Padma Awardees.” In response, singer Shraddha Pandit commented, “Gospel truth spoken @sonunigamofficial.”

Sonu’s Own Recognition

This conversation comes after Sonu himself was awarded the Padma Shri by former President Ram Nath Kovind in 2022. Interestingly, Sonu revealed that he initially hesitated to accept the award. he stated that he had prepared a response for the call regarding the honour. He humorously noted, “Don’t you think it is too late in the day to give me Padma Shri?”
